How to Care for your Custom Dress Post Wedding / Event

Your wedding dress or that killer outfit from a big life event isn’t just fabric and thread - it’s a piece of your story. To keep it looking as fresh and fabulous as the day you first wore it, I’ve set out some simple, foolproof tips for storing your dress. Because, let’s be honest, it deserves to stay as unforgettable as the moments it was made for.

1. Clean It

First things first, get your dress professionally cleaned as soon as possible after the event. This helps remove any stains, dirt, or sweat that could damage the fabric over time. Make sure to choose a cleaner who specialises in wedding dresses or delicate fabrics to ensure it’s handled with care.

2. Use the Right Materials

When it comes to storing your dress, materials matter! Use an acid-free box and acid-free tissue paper. Avoid regular cardboard boxes and plastic garment bags, as these can cause yellowing and mildew. Acid-free materials help protect the fabric and keep it looking fresh.

3. Stuff and Fold

To maintain the shape of your dress, gently stuff it with acid-free tissue paper, especially in the bodice, sleeves, and any folds. This prevents creases and keeps your dress looking just right. Fold the dress carefully with tissue paper between each layer to avoid permanent creases.

4. Store Flat

Once your dress is safely packed, store the box flat in a cool, dry place. Avoid basements and attics since they can be damp or have extreme temperatures. Keeping the box flat prevents the dress from settling and shifting, which can cause fabric stress and distort its shape.

5. Check Yearly

Make it a habit to check your dress at least once a year. Inspect it to ensure it’s still in good condition. If you notice any creases or changes, re-stuff and refold the dress as needed. This regular check helps catch any potential issues early.

6. Handle with Care

There's a reason historians no longer use white gloves when touching historical artefacts. Whenever you handle your dress, simply make sure to have clean, dry hands! This prevents oils and dirt ftransferring to the fabric, keeping it spotless and pristine.

7. Consider Preservation Services

If you’re thinking about long-term storage, especially for my vintage lovers that want to pass your dress down as an heirloom, consider professional preservation services. These experts offer long-term storage solutions designed to maintain your dress’s condition for future generations.

Whether you’re keeping it for the memories or passing it down to future generations, these tips will help keep your dress in tip-top shape for years to come.
